Jim North and a pair of young Webb House volunteers delivered 55,000 pop can tabs to the Ronald McDonald House in Des Moines last fall. The tabs have been accumulating for more than 27 years. (Pictured are Junior Sanabria and Tate Hamilton with Mr. North.)
According to North, when it finally became time to deliver the tabs, he found bags of them in nooks and crannies at the Webb House and his garage. “I just kept finding them and finding them,” he said.
The tabs weren’t counted individually, but a sample was counted and weighed, and the 55,000 tab total was calculated after weighing all the tabs.
Ronald McDonald House Charities sells the tabs to aluminum recyclers and uses the proceeds to fund Ronald McDonald Houses across the country. At Ronald McDonald Houses families of children undergoing medical treatment find housing, meals, and other services.
